A telescopic shade sounds like a gimmick until you use it. Retracted, the lamp is a compact desk light that sits flat on a shelf; extended, it becomes a lantern with the light held high, which is a genuinely different fitting. One object doing two jobs is worth more on a small desk or a balcony table than two objects doing one each.
The head rotates through a full circle, so the beam can be aimed down at a page, out across a table or up at a ceiling for indirect light. Touch dimming gives three levels, which covers working, eating and winding down without any fiddly controls. Three finishes are offered across the range, each with the same natural wooden handle.
It runs on a rechargeable battery, so it works outdoors on a balcony or a camping table as readily as it works beside a bed. Charge it fully before first use and keep the charging port dry, particularly if it has been outside. Wipe the shade with a soft dry cloth, avoid abrasives, and do not leave it in direct sunlight for long periods, where the finish can fade. Extended as a lantern it throws light further; retracted it concentrates the beam on a desk surface, so choose the mode to suit the task. Bring it inside overnight rather than leaving it out in the weather.
