There is no bulb to see and no fixture to look at, only the shape and the glow it throws.
That glow lands on the wall behind the arc and spreads outward as a halo, which is a fundamentally different effect from a downlight. Wall-washed light has no hard edge and casts no sharp shadow, so it flatters a hallway or a bedroom in the evening far better than a directional beam does.
