The Lumibook opens like a hardback and lights from between the pages. Folded shut it is a small wooden-covered book; opened out to any angle up to a full 360 degrees it becomes a ring, an arc or a half-open fan of soft light, and it holds whatever shape you set it to. The pages are tear-resistant paper, the covers sustainable wood.
Three light modes cover warm, cool and natural white, which is more useful than it sounds on a lamp this portable: warm for a bedside, natural for reading, cool for a desk. It charges over USB, the cable is included, and a full charge runs for up to eight hours, so it can go on a shelf, a table or into a bag without a power point nearby.
Three sizes are offered, roughly 10, 15 and 22 centimetres long, all of them 2.5 centimetres thick when closed. Open and close it slowly along the spine rather than forcing the covers, keep it away from water, and wipe the covers with a dry cloth. It is a common gift for readers, and it travels better than any lamp with a cord, since there is nothing on it to snag or break in a bag.
