Two shades instead of one: a clear inner glass holding the light source and a tinted outer shade around it. The gap between them is what creates the depth, because you see the bright inner globe through a coloured layer rather than directly, and the effect is closer to looking into something than at it. That is the whole argument for a double-layer pendant over a single shade.
The tint softens the output without killing it, so the fitting still throws usable light onto a bench or a table while staying comfortable to look at from across a room. It suits kitchens, dining areas, bedrooms and cafes, and works particularly well above a bar counter where people sit at eye level with the fitting and a bare bulb would be unbearable.
The fittings are hand-finished iron, which gives weight and a finish that holds up rather than flaking, and the glass is the part that needs care: handle it by the metal collar during installation, since fingerprints on tinted glass show immediately. Clean with a dry cloth only. Installation is hardwired, so a qualified electrician should fit it with the circuit isolated at the board. A row of three over a bench keeps the drop consistent and the effect deliberate.
