An open woven shade does something no solid one can: the gaps in the weave let light escape sideways in a pattern, so the fitting throws texture onto the ceiling and walls around it rather than only a pool underneath. This one is handwoven from natural bamboo and rattan, which means the weave tightens and loosens slightly across each shade and no two throw exactly the same pattern.
It suits rooms that already lean natural: coastal, boho, Japandi, or a plain modern kitchen that needs one warm element. Over a dining table it is particularly good, because the sideways light keeps the faces around the table lit rather than leaving everyone in shadow below a downward beam. Hung lower over a bench it becomes a feature; hung higher it lights a whole room softly.
Bamboo and rattan are both fast-growing and renewable, which is a genuine advantage over a moulded shade, but they are natural fibres and dislike damp, so keep the fitting out of bathrooms and unventilated laundries. The drop is adjustable at installation to suit the ceiling height. Dust it with a soft brush rather than a cloth, which snags on the weave, and have it wired in by a qualified electrician.
