A glass sphere held just below the ceiling is one of the most forgiving fittings there is. Two finishes change the character considerably. Smoke grey mutes the source into a soft haze and suits a room that already has enough going on; amber warms everything passing through it and turns the fitting into a point of colour rather than a neutral one. Both hide the bulb well enough that the fitting is comfortable to look at directly. Four size and finish combinations are offered across the range.
Semi-flush mounting keeps it close enough to the ceiling for a hallway or a standard bedroom while retaining the depth that makes a sphere read as a sphere. It works with LED, incandescent or fluorescent bulbs, so output is your choice. Handle the glass by its collar, clean with a dry cloth, and have it wired in by a qualified electrician with the circuit isolated. A warm low-wattage bulb suits the amber finish best, while smoke grey takes a brighter one.
