A pleated shade is an old idea that has come back for a good reason: the folds catch light along their edges, so the shade reads as texture rather than a plain cone, and the light coming through fabric is softer than anything glass or metal produces. Set on a solid timber base, the whole fitting lands somewhere between retro and Nordic without committing fully to either.
It belongs beside a bed more than anywhere else. Mounting a light on the wall frees the bedside table entirely, which matters in a small room, and a pleated fabric shade at head height is comfortable to sit next to in a way a bare bulb or a hard shade is not. In a reading nook or a living room corner the same warmth works just as well. Warm bulbs suit the fabric shade better than cool white ones do.
The timber is solid rather than veneer, so the grain runs through it and it will darken very slightly and evenly over the years. Dust the pleated shade with a soft brush rather than a cloth, which catches in the folds, and wipe the wood dry rather than damp. Installation is hardwired, so a qualified electrician should fit it with the circuit isolated at the board.
