Black on black is difficult to make legible, which is why the Sorana uses layers rather than colour: circles of acrylic set at slightly different depths, so the shadows between them define the shape and the white hands read clearly against the matte face. It is a high-contrast clock that manages not to be a graphic slab on the wall.
The matte finish is doing more work than it appears. Gloss black shows every fingerprint and reflects whatever light is in the room, which makes a clock harder to read from an angle; matte absorbs it, so the face stays even and the hands stay visible from across a living room or an office at any time of day. Contrast is what makes a clock readable at a distance, and this one has plenty of it.
The movement is silent quartz, so nothing ticks in a bedroom or a study, and acrylic keeps the whole thing light enough for a single wall hook rather than a rated fixing. Keep it out of direct sunlight so the finish holds, dust with a soft dry cloth, and avoid solvent cleaners, which haze acrylic permanently and cannot be undone once done. Hang it against a pale wall so the black form reads clearly from across the room.
