The goose neck is a Victorian idea that has never been improved on: a curved arm that carries the shade out over whatever you are doing, so the light falls where you need it rather than beside it. Here the curve is sculpted metal in an antique brass finish, and the shade at the end of it is patterned glass shaped like an open flower.
Downward light through a floral glass shade is the point of the design. The pattern in the glass shows against the surface below, so the pool of light has texture rather than being a plain circle, and because the output is directed rather than spread it works genuinely well for reading on a bedside table or a desk without lighting the whole room. The arm holds its position, so it can be set once and left alone.
The metal is durable with a smooth polished finish, and the antique brass tone warms up considerably once the lamp is switched on. USB power keeps it simple: it runs from a laptop, wall charger or power bank, so there is no bulky transformer. Clean the glass shade with a soft dry cloth, avoid solvents, and wipe the brass finish rather than polishing it.
